Chris Kirk is closing in on a career payday at TPC Boston, leading late and in line for a $1.44 million winner's check.

One major critique of the PGA Tour's postseason is that it's simply a contrived cash-grab. The FedEx Cup has certainly made golf relevant past the season's final major, and the bumps in the format have been smoothed out from the early years. It consistently draws the top players, and the primary reason for that is all the cash that's up for grabs.

A total of $67 million will get doled out over the four-week playoff stretch. Each of the four events will have an $8 million purse, and then the Tour also kicks in an extra $35 million in bonus money. Every single player who makes the postseason, and even the 25 closest guys who didn't get to the playoffs, will get a little extra cash. The cut down this week eliminates the bottom 30 of the remaining 100 players in the FedEx Cup. Those ranked 71st and lower may be done for the season, but they'll also get no less than $75k in bonus money.

And even if you're on the wrong side of the FedEx Cup line, you're still taking a chunk of the $8 million Deutsche Bank Championship purse if you made the cut. The FedEx Cup purses are some of the biggest of the season, with only the WGC events, The Players, and the four majors handing out more cash. The winner is set to earn $1.44 million.

Chris Kirk is the leader late in Monday's final round. He got his second PGA Tour win last fall, which was technically a part of this season's schedule. The McGladrey Classic, part of the new wraparound schedule, paid out $990k to the winner. It was the start of Kirk's top earning season. He's over $3M in winnings for the season, and has a career total of $8,456,303 Should he win, this week's Deutsche Bank Championship would obviously be the biggest payday of his career.
