The man who climbed the fence during Saturday's race at Richmond apologized on Monday.
The intoxicated fan who climbed atop the catchfence in the middle of a NASCAR race spoke publically outside a Henrico County (Va.) courthouse Monday.
James Dennis, 53, decided to scale the fencing surrounding the track whiles attending the Sprint Cup regular season finale Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway. Once he was coaxed down by security, Dennis was charged with being drunk in public and disorderly conduct
"I am deeply in regret of what I did," Dennis told WTVR-Richmond. "I want to apologize to everyone. It was just stupid.
"I got hung up in the moment. Cool race. I guess we never grow up."
With Dennis, who was half-naked, sitting on the fence in Turn 4 NASCAR was forced to call for a caution with 70 laps remaining. In the official box score the reason listed for caution is "security."
Race leader and eventual winner Brad Keselowski didn't notice Dennis, but several other drivers did. The caution came during a long green flag run and as several drivers were making scheduled pit stops.
"That caution put me two laps down," Denny Hamlin said. "Knucklehead. If he wants to play in traffic, it's his problem."
