The Blue Devils have the No. 1 seed, but Gonzaga, Iowa State and others stand in their way of Indianapolis.
The South region of the NCAA Tournament offers plenty of intrigue, with upset possibilities sprinkled throughout. Duke and Gonzaga were awarded the top two seeds in the bracket, but Iowa State figures to be a strong No. 3 seed with the potential to make noise.
No. 1 seed Duke will play its first game on Friday against either Robert Morris or North Florida in a 7:10 p.m. ET game in Charlotte. Barring catastrophe, the Blue Devils will face the winner of No. 8 San Diego State and No. 9 St. John's in the third round. The Aztecs and Red Storm play their second round game on Friday around 9:40 p.m.
Gonzaga's first game will be a late-night matchup with North Dakota State at 9:50 p.m. on Friday in Seattle. If the Bulldogs win that game, they'll play the winner of No. 7 Iowa and No. 10 Davidson, who play at 7:20 p.m. While Gonzaga didn't wind up with a No. 1 seed, the Bulldogs are fortunate to land in Seattle where they could play their first two games in what should be a pro-Bulldog crowd with the games being played some 300 miles away from Gonzaga's home in Spokane. The Bulldogs might need that advantage as they enter the year coming off four straight third-round exits.
