Allen Hurns is the latest under-the-radar player to put up huge fantasy numbers in his debut. He will be a popular figure on the waiver wire, but is he worth an add?
It happens every year. A player owned in few if any fantasy football leagues puts together a monster performance and quickly becomes the most popular player on waivers. This week, Jacksonville Jaguars rookie wide receiver Allen Hurns is the first such player. The undrafted free agent is off to a huge debut, catching four passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. His touchdowns came on his first two catches.
There is a lot of football left in Week 1, which means Hurns might not be the only big performer to come out of nowhere. For now though, Hurns is the big name for waivers on Tuesday. He is currently owned in 7 percent of Yahoo! leagues, and only moved into the starting lineup after Cecil Shorts III injured his hamstring earlier this week.
Hamstring injuries are always tough to project, and given his production, Hurns has probably earned another real football start. He is not a guy you want to slot in for a fantasy football start because his production is entirely unpredictable. He is worth a grab if you need a reserve, but unless you feel like crazy gambles, let's wait a week or two to see what else he does. The Jaguars travel to face a Washington squad that has a whole lot of question marks on defense. If he can put together a solid performance, maybe then consider him for a Week 3 start.
