The Giants and Chargers are underdogs in the MNF doubleheader. After Sunday's parade of underdog winners, will bettors bank them at Detroit and Arizona respectively?
Do football bettors automatically side with the underdogs on Monday night after the favorites were demolished 10-3 ATS on Sunday?
If so, sportsbooks should expect a flood of money on the Giants as five-point underdogs at Detroit and on the Chargers, who are +2.5 at Arizona.
Sportsbooks had one of their best regular-season days ever Sunday when underdogs clobbered the chalk. Only a second-half rally by the Eagles against Jacksonville saved that game from also going to the dogs, according to Odds Shark.
So with a pair of Monday Night Football clashes going to open the season, it's a chance for bettors to hide their wallets until Week 2 or to try to reclaim some Sunday losses.
Giants at Lions
New York has been a profitable play on Monday nights, covering the spread in eight of their past 12 trips to the national limelight. However, the past five times they opened the season on the road, they failed to cover.
Detroit meanwhile has seen a solid 63 percent of the betting consensus backing them. They are 8-3 ATS in their past 11 openers but are just 1-5 ATS in their past six games as home favorites.
Odds Shark Prediction: 22-16 Detroit
Chargers at Cardinals
Arizona has covered just one Monday Night Football spread in eight tries since 1995. Meanwhile the Chargers are riding a 4-1 ATS in the same situation.
The Cardinals have been a great bet in Week 1 in recent years, rolling to a 5-1 ATS profit in six seasons. But put them against the Chargers, and the Cards have limped to a bankroll-bleeding 2-7 SU mark since 1987.
This situation has been a boon to San Diego bettors as they are enjoying a 8-1-1 ATS streak in their past 10 games as road underdogs.
Odds Shark Prediction: 26-24 Arizona
