The first NFL Sunday is off and running.
New York Jets 19, Oakland Raiders 14
Geno Smith still has turnover problems, but the Jets defense was able to stifle the Raiders to carry the day. Smith had a fumble and an interception early but also added a touchdown pass to Chris Johnson to take a 10-7 lead in the second quarter. Chris Ivory then broke the game open with a 71-yard touchdown rumble with eight minutes left in the game. The Raiders offense, meanwhile, gained just 158 total yards and only 25 on the ground. Rookie Derek Carr went 20-of-32 for 151 yards and two touchdowns in his first NFL start.
Houston Texans 17, Washington 6
The Texans lost Jadeveon Clowney to a knee injury, but otherwise got 2014 off on the right foot on the back of a second-quarter scoring splurge. DeAndre Hopkins took a Ryan Fitzpatrick 76 yards to take a one-point lead, then a blocked punt made it 14-6. Houston got reliable performances from veterans Arian Foster (103 rushing yards) and Andre Johnson (93 receiving yards) Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III threw for 267 yards but couldn't find the end zone.
Minnesota Vikings 34, St. Louis Rams 6
The Rams are already missing Sam Bradford in a bad way. Shaun Hill was benched at halftime after throwing for just 81 yards and a pick, and his little-known replacement Austin Davis didn't fare that much better. The Vikings' Adrian Peterson ran for 75 yards and Matt Cassel rewarded the team's decision to start him over rookie Teddy Bridgewater by tossing a pair of touchdowns. The play of the game came from Minnesota wideout Corderrelle Patterson, who took a pitch out of the backfield 67 yards for a third-quarter score.
