Is Falcao heading to England? If you trust the rumour mill, there's a chance.
According to the Guardian -- and several other sources besides -- Colombian striker Radamel Falcao could be the highest-profile deadline day signing in a long, long while. And if rumour is to be believed, teams like Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal are forming up for the hunt, joining Valencia and Real Madrid in the bidding to secure his signature ahead of the transfer deadline.
But for a potential cost of £55 million, most clubs will be priced out of the deal. It will almost certainly be beyond Manchester City's resources thanks to the FFP sanctions UEFA slapped them with earlier in the summer*, and a last-minute deal for a hellaciously expensive player with a dodgy knee has never been Arsenal's style either. And while United have that kind of money, they'd be much better served buying a player to help them win and keep the ball rather than another finisher.
*Unless they manage to sell Alvaro Negredo, of course.
Indeed, the correct reading -- the 'offered to' line seems to give this away -- for these rumours is probably that Jorge Mendes is trying to drum up a market for the Monaco man, manufacturing a way to get him yet another move and another payday following the ACL injury that ruled him out of the 2014 World Cup. Real Madrid remain the most likely target, and it's obviously not impossible that he does end up in the Premier League, but the cynical view is probably the right one in this case.
