Serena Williams wins 2014 U.S. Open women's title

Serena Williams claimed here 17th singles Grand Slam title and her third straight U.S. Open title.

Caroline Wozniacki authored possibly the best Grand Slam run of her career, yet it still wasn't enough to outduel Serena Williams. Williams, the No. 1 seed, continued her U.S. Open dominance, winning the women's singles final on Sunday. The title is her third straight at the U.S. Open and fifth overall in the event. It also adds to her long list of Grand Slam victories, giving her 17 women's singles titles.

The 32-year-old Williams was in dominant form during the event and she capped the tournament in style with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Wozniacki. Williams never dropped a set during the tournament or lost more than three games in any set. Williams' dominant form was on display early. Although Wozniacki managed to win three games in the opening set, Williams served well and recorded 15 winners compared to just one from Wozniacki. Based on her history in Grand Slam events, winning the first set all but sealed up the championship.

Serena is 225-5 at Grand Slams when winning the first set, including 74-1 at the @usopen.

It was more of the same in the second set. Williams jumped out early and continued to serve well while racking up winners. Wozniacki did an admirable job of hanging around despite Williams playing at a very high level. She trailed 4-3 in the second set, but whenever she made a run, Williams took her game to another level. Williams won the final two games in commanding fashion to complete the straight set victory.
