You would think a team of NHL players would be able to win at least one out of 18 shootouts, but the Devils have somehow found a way to lose 18 in a row.
The New Jersey Devils were not only the worst shootout team in the NHL last season, they were the worst shootout team in the history of the league since the shootout was introduced for the 2005-06 season.
Their 0-13 mark in the shootout was a major factor in the team missing the playoffs (even a 6-7 record would have been good enough to get them in the postseason) and you have to think that they're going to improve this season simply because there is nowhere for the team to go but up.
They didn't get off to a good start on Friday.
The Devils lost to the Dallas Stars, 3-2, in a game that needed a shootout to decide the winner. And thanks to goals from Jamie Benn and Jason Spezza (and no goals from the Devils' two shooters) the Stars were able to pull out the win and in the process hand the Devils their 18th consecutive loss in the shootout, a streak that goes all the way back to March 2013. Their last shootout win came March 10, 2013 when they defeated the Winnipeg Jets.
During the Devils' current shootout drought their shooters have scored on only six of their 59 attempts. It's a little unfathomable as to how an NHL team can be this inept in one of these things, especially since they were 12-4 in the shootout in 2011-12. Losing snipers like Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise certainly has not helped things, but you would think that at some point over their past 18 shootouts they would have won at least one by accident.
