The Seattle Sounders finally have a piece of MLS hardware. The club that has been so good since their expansion season in 2009, only to repeatedly fall short of a league trophy, are 2014 Supporters' Shield winners.
Seattle entered Saturday level on points with the LA Galaxy, and were hosting LA in the final match of the season. They only needed a draw because they held the tiebreaker over the Galaxy, but they made that a moot point with two late goals by Marco Pappa to win, 2-0.
The Sounders finished the season on 64 points, an astounding feet considering how tough the Western Conference was this season. They faced a tough slate and came out on top, capping it with a win over the Galaxy in front of their home fans to set off a celebration at CenturyLink Field.
After a phenomenal regular season, the Sounders are now favorites to win MLS Cup. They will be the top seed in the West and would host the final, if they qualify. The Galaxy will undoubtedly be considered their strongest contenders and a conference final matchup between the two could be a classic.
Seattle already won the U.S. Open Cup this season, and now they add the Supporters' Shield for the double. If they can also capture MLS Cup, they will be the first team in history to win the treble.
