Tim Breedlove, trustee of the Dean E. Smith Revocable Trust, confirmed with SB Nation that the letter and the check are indeed real, as this was something that he set up prior to his passing. Breedlove said that UNC was "instrumental" in helping all of the letters get to their destinations.
In total, "about 180" of the letters were sent out, to every letterman that ever played under Coach Smith.
