Switzerland is on the brink of its first Davis Cup title heading into Sunday's reverse singles matches against France. The Swiss have a 2-1 advantage after coach Severin Luthi made the decision to put in Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer in place of Marco Chiudinelli and Michael Lammer for Saturday's doubles match against Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet.
The decision means Federer and Wawrinka will need to pull triple duty given that they also played on Friday. However, the move has worked for the time being, as the Swiss pair had little trouble winning their match, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. The series was tied 1-1 heading into the doubles match, after Federer fell to Gael Monfils and Wawrinka took down Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Friday.
Sunday will feature the reverse of those matchups, as Federer takes on Tsonga and Wawrinka faces Monfils. If Federer is victorious against Tsonga in the first match Sunday, then Switzerland wins the title. If he falls, then it will be up to Wawrinka to lift his country to victory.
It's an interesting situation, given that Federer is dealing with a back injury and wasn't exactly healthy and rested coming into the tournament. Now he'll be playing his third match in as many days, while Tsonga sat on Saturday. If Tsonga comes out on top, Wawrinka will have his hands full with Monfils, who easily dispatched Federer on Friday.
The day's matches will get underway bright and early, with coverage provided by the Tennis Channel. Their coverage will begin at 7 a.m. ET and will run through 1 p.m.
