Swinging at the puck near the goal is usually a good idea, unless you're a defenseman trying to clear during a power play.

Sometimes, you'll see an own goal and almost feel bad for the defense because it's the result of dumb luck or a bad bounce. This own goal by Andrew Ference of the Edmonton Oilers, on the other hand, seems awfully fair given what the defenseman was doing near the goal.

That's just not a smart play by the Oilers' captain. Ference appears to be trying to swat the puck out of harm's way, but given its location and the angle at which he approaches, there's basically no way the defenseman squeezes that outside the post and into safety near the corner.

Still, he went for it, and ended up handing Chicago a goal it hardly needed. Midway through the second period in Edmonton, the Blackhawks are already leading 6-0.
