Toronto somehow managed to move the worst contract in the NHL.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have accomplished the impossible.
General manager Dave Nonis on Thursday traded David Clarkson and his ridiculous contract to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Nathan Horton. No salary was retained on either side.
This is a move that has and will continue to send shockwaves through the hockey community, as Clarkson was considered by many to be untradeable. The veteran winger is signed for $5.25 million through 2020, yet has just 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) in 58 games this season. He had only 11 points (six goals, five assists) in 60 contests last year.
Horton carries a $5.3 million AAV through 2019, however he may never suit up again due to a serious back ailment. This injury has him on long-term IR, meaning the Leafs have to pay him, but that money doesn't count against the cap.
As surprising as it is to see this deal go down, it actually makes a good bit of sense for both sides. Toronto must be thrilled to rid itself of an unproductive player and open up some cap space; Columbus, by no means a big budget franchise, could ill afford to spend so much on someone who is incapable of producing.
