Bumgarner still stuck out the side in the eighth inning and leads 2-0.
San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner was six outs from making history on Tuesday night but Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau spoiled his perfect game with a leadoff double in the eighth inning at AT&T Park in San Francisco.
Bumgarner retired the first 21 batters he faced before Morneau opened the eighth inning with a line drive to right field for the first hit and first baserunner of the game for the Rockies.
But Bumgarner recovered to strike out Michael McKenry, Matt McBride and Brandon Barnes to end the frame without any damage.
The Giants lead the Rockies, 2-0, in the middle of the eighth. The only runs of the game came on a two-run home run by Buster Posey in the bottom of the sixth.
Bumgarner on the night has 12 strikeouts and no walks, needing just 94 pitches to get through eight innings. The 12 strikeouts match a season high for the left-hander, set just five days ago in a win over the Cubs.
