The Barclays $8 million in prize money is on the larger side for the PGA Tour season, but it's just the beginning of a month where $67 million will be won.
The four-week FedEx Cup postseason is the richest stretch on the PGA Tour's schedule. It makes sense, this being their playoffs. But on top of the deep purses at each individual tournament, which are all $8 million, there's also a huge reserve of $35 million in "bonus money" paid out to players, some of whom didn't even qualify for the playoffs.
If you're one of the 25 players heading home after the first round, you're walking away with at least $70,000. If a player made the cut, he will, as usual, get a slice of the total $8 million and some bonus money as he officially exits the 2014 season. The $10 million grand prize for the final winner after four weeks gets all the attention, but some of these bonus money totals are pretty astounding. Even the players who just come close to making the postseason, those ranked No. 126 to 150 in the FEC standings, earned $32,000 for not even making the actual playoffs. Here's a breakdown of the bonus money that will be paid out over this month:

Aside from that bonus cash, the $8 million purse for this week's tournament is already on the larger side. The majors, the Players, and WGC events all have purses over eight (and even nine) million, but that's it. The winner will take home $1.44 million of that $8 million purse, and also acquire a huge chunk of FedExCup points that will set up an even more lucrative stretch run.
A victory by either Jason Day or Jim Furyk, who started Sunday with a share of the lead, would shoot them to the new No. 1 spot in the standings and probably guarantee a spot inside the top 5 by the time the TOUR Championship arrives. The top 5 in that final postseason event are the only ones who automatically win it all with a win at that tournament. So a victory in the opener would be just the start of a huge cash month for one of these players, almost assuring bonus money in at least the high six figures in Atlanta.
Furyk has more than $62 million in career earnings, and won the $10 million grand prize with his 2010 FedEx Cup title. So he's not really hurting for cash and the winner's payout is probably secondary for him on Sunday at Ridgewood. The 44-year-old, however, hasn't won since that 2010 TOUR Championship, despite sitting on the 54-hole lead seven times in the intervening years. He's too good and too consistent to have this long a winless streak, so he's definitely grinding more for a trophy than the check.
