Jimmie Johnson completed a Hendrick Motorsports sweep of the Daytona 500 qualifying races.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Jimmie Johnson won a dramatic second Budweiser Duel qualifying race Thursday at Daytona International Speedway.
Johnson completed a Hendrick Motorsports sweep of the races that set the field for Sunday's Daytona 500, with teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. taking the victory in the first duel. Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards finished second and third, respectively.
Needing to race her way into the Daytona 500, Danica Patrick did just that by finishing 10th. Patrick started at the rear of the field following a practice crash that necessitated a change to a backup car, but quickly maneuvered her way within the cutoff to advance.
A late spin made things exciting with Patrick sustaining damage and falling to the back, but an assist from Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Kurt Busch helped Patrick charge back up above the transfer position.
The 2013 Daytona 500 pole-sitter has had a rough Speedweeks. Patrick crashed in Saturday's non-points Sprint Unlimited and struggled in qualifying, posting the 30th-fastest time. In practice Wednesday she crashed, which forced her to a backup car for the duel.
