Maxx Williams and Clive Walford both turned in strong performances at the NFL Combine.
The top tight ends from around the nation converged on Indianapolis to try and convince NFL teams they deserve a look in the 2015 NFL Draft. The tight end position is one where you typically only hear about the top one or two players coming out of college, with just a handful of guys going in the top two rounds.
But the tight end position is evolving in the NFL, as we've seen with players like Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski. NFL teams want to score a big guy who can catch the football and create matchup nightmares for shorter linebackers. There's a few such players in this year's draft, notably Maxx Williams of Minnesota and Clive Walford.
Walford and Williams had pretty similar showings at the combine. Walford ran a 4.79 40-yard dash, while Williams ran 4.78. Walford had a slightly better broad jump, but Williams had four inches on Walford in the vertical leap. Whatever the case, those two should be the first guys off the board on draft day. Mycole Pruitt of Southern Illinois boosted his draft status by turning in the fastest 40 among tight ends at 4.58, handily beating the next guy, Wes Saxton of Southern Alabama.
