Trae Waynes and Marcus Peters were among the defensive backs who took part in the bench press Sunday.
The 2015 NFL Scouting Combine is almost done, with the defensive backs set to participate in drills and on-field workouts to close the whole thing out on Monday. But first, defensive linemen and linebackers are doing their workouts while the defensive backs hit the weight room for the bench press.
The bench press, which is simply a test to see how many reps of 225 pounds a player can put up, is simply a measure of strength and stamina. It's a test that's most relevant to offensive and defensive linemen given how much of their game is centered around strength. For cornerbacks and safeties, Monday's agility drills will be much, much more important.
That doesn't mean the bench press isn't worth talking about, though. While none of the smaller-framed defensive backs managed to break 30 reps, Josh Shaw out of USC managed to put up 26 reps, the most of any other defensive back. Ibraheim Campbell recorded 23 reps, Clayton Geathers had 22 reps, Kyshoen Jarrett managed 21 reps and Justin Coleman was the only other to hit the 20 mark.
Several defensive backs didn't participate, but of those who did, Garry Peters of Clemson put up the fewest at seven. Many of the NFL Draft's top prospects took part in the bench press. Trae Waynes is close to being the consensus top cornerback and he finished with 19 reps, above the average. Marcus Peters of Washington, who isn't far behind Waynes, managed 17 reps.
