City rivals clash when the Rangers and Islanders play on Monday.
The last few seasons of New York Islanders mediocrity might have cooled their rivalry with the New York Rangers a bit. But considering their success this season, the matchup between the two New York teams is guaranteed to be the highlight of a busy Monday in the NHL.
The Rangers visit Long Island at 7 p.m. with both teams on the rise in the Eastern Conference. The Islanders are fresh off a 6-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday. Captain John Tavares led the way in that victory with two goals and two assists, a four-point night in which he was by far the best player on the ice.
Meanwhile, the Rangers are coming off an impressive victory of their own. New York confidently handled the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday in Glendale, earning a 5-2 win. Rick Nash put on his typical dominant performance, scoring a goal while leading the way on two others. Nash lost the NHL lead in goals to Alex Ovechkin on Sunday night, so it will be interesting to see how motivated he is to take the crown back.
