With Roberto Luongo a thing of the past, the Canucks have a new starting goalie in Ryan Miller.

In Round 2 of the NHL Draft, the Canucks selected who they hope will be their future goalie in Boston College's Thatcher Demko. But on Tuesday, as free agency opened up, new GM Jim Benning addressed the present, signing the top netminder on the market in Ryan Miller.

Demko is probably at least three years away from realistically seeing any NHL action, so Miller both provides a bridge to the future potential franchise goalie, and also helps make the Canucks more competitive right now. The Canucks goaltending vacancy really began in the middle of last season, when Vancouver shipped Roberto Luongo to Florida. Eddie Lack started half of the games in net last season, but Benning still was looking to add help in the crease for the coming year. The Canucks have been something of an open door when it comes to goalies, having previously flirted with another Boston College goalie in Cory Schneider, before trading him to New Jersey before the 2013 draft.
