Tigers defensive coordinator Brent Venables has a personal get back coach.

This is Clemson assistant strength and conditioning coach Adam Smotherman. His job is keeping Brent Venables safe, no matter how far the coach wanders off the sideline while making play calls and monitoring players.

Smotherman did his job to such perfection Monday night against Oklahoma that ESPN spent a great portion of the fourth quarter focusing on his deeds. The game was a 40-point blowout at the time, so this was about the only competition going on.

His qualifications for get back duties, per Clemson:

Smotherman is Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) by the CSCCa, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the NSCA, a Level 1 Sports Performance Coach certified through USA Weightlifting, and a Certified Tsunami Barbell Specialist. Smotherman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education and History from Vanderbilt and is nearing completion of a Master of Science degree in Youth Development Leadership from Clemson.

Smotherman, a native of Smyrna, TN and graduate of Smyrna High School, was a four-year letterman at defensive tackle for Vanderbilt, where his strength and conditioning coach was John Sisk. Under Sisk's tutelage, Smotherman earned the team's Ironman Lineman Award three times, the Lifter of the Year Award two times, the Dedication Award, and was elected team co-captain his senior year.
