Everton are going to have to do without their No. 1 goalkeeper for the entire month of January. Manager Roberto Martínez has announced that he has a torn left calf muscle. He should miss between five and six weeks of action.

Howard picked up the injury on Boxing Day, against Stoke City. The team didn't have a prognosis by their next match, but he wasn't fit to start and Joel Robles took his place. The Toffees' No. 2 is going to have a lot more work to do in the coming weeks, including tough matches against the likes of West Ham and Manchester City.

If Howard returns quickly, he could be back in time for the Merseyside Derby against Liverpool, which is scheduled for February 7. He should be back in time for Everton's Europa League trip to Young Boys on February 19.

Howard hasn't had a great season between the sticks for Everton, but on the evidence of Sunday's performance, Joel isn't any better. He had a terrible game in a loss to Newcastle, and he'll need to up his game for Everton to move up the table. They're currently all the way down in 12th.
