The loud head coach is looking toward the cameras in case nothing opens up on the sideline.
Former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan is talking with ESPN executives hoping to line up a role with the network if a coaching position does not materialize, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. Ryan coached six seasons with the Jets before owner Woody Johnson relieved him of his duties on Monday.
This news comes as no surprise to anybody familiar with Ryan and his bombastic personality. Ryan would be a terrific television persona, especially given the platform to speak his mind and not just analyze tape. Still, this appears to only be a backup plan.
Ryan doesn't currently have any interviews scheduled for a coaching position, but those could come about shortly with the hiring process beginning for four teams. Also, Dan Quinn and Todd Bowles, both defensive coordinators with the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals, respectively, are hot candidates for head coaching vacancies and have already received interview requests. Should either get a head coaching job, Ryan would be a nice fit in either place, which both run a 3-4 defense.
