Chizik won a national championship at Auburn with Cam Newton, but was fired two years later after a 3-9 season in 2012. Before that, he was the head coach at Iowa State, the defensive coordinator at Texas and the defensive coordinator at Auburn. Auburn's defense ranked 36th and 13th in Chizik's first two years, but was 89th and 95th in his final two years, according to F/+.
North Carolina ranked 108th defensively in F/+ this year, and the Tar Heels gave up 70 points to rival East Carolina in a blowout loss early in the season that surely left some UNC fans inconsolable after what promised to be a good season. The team needs some sort of defensive overall, and Chizik would ultimately be tasked with helping Larry Fedora off the hot seat in Chapel Hill.
