The early moments of Sunday’s NASCAR race at Pocono were anything but dull.
A day that began with much promise for Danica Patrick ended quickly when a tire blew and she slammed the Turn 2 wall Sunday at Pocono Raceway.
Patrick was running 10th when she scraped the Turn 2 wall on Lap 15, which then punctured her right-front tire. One lap later the No. 10 machine started smoking with the tire soon letting go thereafter, sending Patrick hard into the same portion of the wall. Her Stewart-Haas Racing team made repairs and Patrick stayed on the track.
"Right rear blew," Patrick said to her team over the radio. "So sorry."
Patrick had qualified 10th and had shown speed in practice. Her troubles were among a rash of eventful moments in the early stages of the GoBowling.com 400.
Pre-race favorite Brad Keselowski got sideways and nearly spun out in front of the field on the opening lap. Keselowski dropped from third to 12th, but continued without incident.
Jimmie Johnson had a tire go down on Lap 8 and brushed the wall. He fell a lap down as his team made repairs, but received the ‘Lucky Dig' when the caution fell for Patrick's crash. Another contender, Kyle Busch, lost an engine on Lap 23 and is out of the race.
