The second day of elimination games has set the stage for quarterfinal action from the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
Eight teams punched their tickets to the quarterfinals after grinding out wins in the Las Vegas Summer League on Thursday night.
Charlotte Hornets 104, New Orleans Pelicans 75
P.J. Hairston lived up to the sharp-shooting hype on Thursday, going 4-of-9 from three as he led all scorers with 21 points in a Hornets win over the Pelicans. Cody Zeller contributed 16 points to go with seven rebounds, and Josh Davis grabbed a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds for Charlotte.
New Orleans dug themselves a hole early, and fought back to get within 12 points at half. The Pelicans were led by strong play from Russ Smith and Courtney Fells, who registered 19 points apiece, but it wasn't enough to topple the Hornets, who had five players score in double digits.
Sacramento Kings 100, Minnesota Timberwolves 86
The Kings advanced to the quarterfinals on Thursday after escaping a Minnesota run in the second half. Sacramento closed the game on a 17-2 run and were fueled by second-year guard Ben McLemore's 22 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Minnesota's Shabazz Muhammad led all scorers with 24 points on 7-of-14 shooting, adding three rebounds and two steals. Gorgui Dieng continued his impressive run from the regular season with his performance, dropping 15 points while grabbing 12 rebounds.
San Antonio Spurs 86, Utah Jazz 77
The Utah Jazz had no solution for San Antonio's Austin Daye, who led all scorers with 20 points in addition to racking up four rebounds, three steals and two assists in a Spurs win. San Antonio had five players score in double digits and limited the Jazz to just 18.2 percent from three-point range.
For Utah, it was Rodney Hood doing the bulk of the work on offense, recording 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting with five rebounds and one assist. Brock Motum added 14 points off the bench and Ian Clark was the only Jazz player to register a positive +/- for the game.
Atlanta Hawks 88, Portland Trail Blazers 65
Atlanta took care of business rather easily against the Blazers, dominating the game as Adreian Payne led the way for the Hawks with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting. With Thomas Robinson out with a thumb injury, Portland was without one of its biggest sparks of the tournament.
Will Barton continued to impress, recording a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, although he shot a woeful 4-of-19 from the field. Bobby Brown led all scorers with 20 points, and fellow Blazer guard C.J. McCollum was right behind him with 17 points.
Washington Wizards 78, Miami Heat 67
Glen Rice Jr. was dominant for Washington, dropping in 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Wizards advanced to the next round. A fourth-quarter push by the Wizards saw them take the lead with five minutes left and they never looked back.
Otto Porter helped with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, plus six rebounds and two steals. For Miami, it was Justin Hamilton doing the heavy lifting with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, adding nine rebounds and two assists. Rookie Shabazz Napier added 14 points but totaled just one assist.
Houston Rockets 96, Cleveland Cavaliers 90
Isaiah Canaan scored 28 points and Donatas Motiejunas added 21 points and 11 rebounds as the Rockets continue their run in Vegas. Those two truly carried Houston against Andrew Wiggins and company, shooting a combined 18-of-27 from the field while the rest of the team shot 13-of-43.
Wiggins also played well, scoring 21 points thanks to 20 free throw attempts, but took just five shots from the field. Will Cherry added 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting for Cleveland, while Anthony Bennett put up 11 points and six rebounds in the losing effort.
Chicago Bulls 79, Philadelphia 76ers 68
Chicago stays unbeaten in Las Vegas with a strong defensive effort, holding Philadelphia to just 27 points in the second half. Neither team shot well from the field, but the Bulls won out with 18 points apiece from Tony Snell and Cameron Bairstow.
Jordan McRae led the way for the Sixers, scoring a game-high 25 points on 7-of-8 shooting, but the rest of the team was a disaster. Take away the 2014 second-round pick's performance and Philly shot 26 percent from the field. Nerlens Noel was one of just three players to top five points, going for 14 points and five rebounds.
New York Knicks 80, D-League Select 73
The Knicks also maintained their perfect record at Summer League by topping the D-League Select team on Thursday. Tim Hardaway Jr. led New York with 25 points on 8-of-17 shooting to continue a strong summer for the 2013 first-round pick.
Only three players scored in double-digits for the Knicks, but a strong defensive effort carried the team to victory. The D-Leaguers shot 37 percent from the field and committed 18 turnovers, with Tony Mitchell's 20 points leading topping the score sheet. Tre Kelley added 18 points and a game-high six assists, while the Knicks got 14 and five from Shane Larkin.
