C.J. McCollum led the Blazers over the Hawks and Doug McDermott poured in 20 to lift the Bulls, among the action in Vegas on Tuesday.
Tuesday's slate of action in Las Vegas was full of high-scoring games, complete with a wild show of athleticism from the Portland Trail Blazers. Let's take a look at the action.
Trail Blazers 91, Atlanta Hawks 71
The Portland Trail Blazers brought six roster players from last season's quarterfinals playoff team, and looked to be strong opposition to the Hawks' more traditional Summer League lineup. C.J. McCollum scored 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting for Portland, including 6-of-9 from three.
Will Barton steals the inbounds pass and puts up the wild layup.
For Atlanta, it was a balanced scoring load led by Dennis Schröder with 16 points. Although the Hawks challenged, the Blazers put on an impressive showing at the rim, including a thunderous dunk by guard Will Barton and an alley-oop by Meyers Leonard that stole the show.
Chicago Bulls 107, Minnesota Timberwolves 73
Minnesota kept it close through the first half but the Bulls roared off to a 34-point win with a run starting at the beginning of the third quarter. Chicago's No. 11 overall pick Doug McDermott led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting, going 4-of-7 from beyond the three-point line.
Kyrylo Fesenko was the standout for the Timberwolves, netting 13 points and seven rebounds as Minnesota struggled to keep up. Chicago did a good job of forcing turnovers, finishing the night +8 as the Timberwolves simply couldn't hold onto the ball.
Houston Rockets 83, Los Angeles Clippers 60
Continuing in the day's theme of blowout losses, the Clippers failed to put up a fight against the Rockets in a 23-point loss on Tuesday. Houston got out to an 11-point lead in the first quarter and the Rockets never looked back. Donatas Motiejunas led all scorers with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, adding five rebounds three steals and two assists.
Los Angeles looked thoroughly outmatched, especially on the offensive side of the ball where Shawn Jones was the only player to register scoring in the double digits with 10 points. The Clippers had added a ridiculously high 35 turnovers in the loss.
Washington Wizards 85, Miami Heat 83
In the first close contest of the day, the Wizards edged out the Heat by two points after staving off a comeback by Miami late in the game. Washington had a resounding double-digit lead for much of the game, and a 24-point performance by Glen Rice Jr. helped push the Wizards over the top.
It was tricky in the fourth quarter, as Miami's leading scorer James Nunnally hit a jumper with six seconds left to pull the Heat within two. On the ensuing Heat possession, rookie Shabazz Napier's game-winning three-pointer came up short and the Wizards remained unbeaten in Summer League play.
Phoenix Suns 97, Philadelphia 76ers 88
The Suns pulled away late from the Sixers in the fourth quarter as T.J. Warren dominated the game with 28 points on 12-of-22 shooting for Phoenix. In total, six players for the Suns scored in double figures, including 15 points from Miles Plumlee.
Philadelphia was led by Jordan McRae, who dropped 21 points on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting, adding four rebounds and two assists. Despite the closeness of the game and the Sixers limiting turnovers and the Suns' attack from beyond the arc, it wasn't enough to keep Phoenix from grabbing a win late.
Utah Jazz 87, Denver Nuggets 69
Great shooting and limited fouls helped the Utah Jazz grab their second win of the Summer League over the Nuggets on Tuesday. Led by Erik Murphy and Ian Clark, who scored 17 points apiece, the Jazz shot a resounding 48.6 percent from the field while limiting Denver to just 31.5 percent.
The Nuggets' top performer was Gary Harris, who scored 18 points on a disappointing 6-of-20 from the field. Denver was even worse from the three-point line, where they shot 11 percent on 27 attempts. Utah was able to dominate the game defensively, leading to an easy win.
