Shocking news just broke that the Toronto Maple Leafs have dismissed assitant general mangers Clause Loiselle and Dave Poulin, and hired Kyle Dubas of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds as their replacement.

It's been awhile that the Toronto Maple Leafs have been the punchline for jokes from analytics people around the internet. They were terrible by every metric imaginable, yet their smug management team insisted they knew something no one else did, until they missed the playoffs last year and it all came crashing down.

When Brendan Shanahan was hired as president, it seemed like the biggest change was firing Randy Carlyle's two assistant coaches, but now the other shoe has dropped.

Assistant GMs and radio stars Dave Poulin and Claude Loiselle have been sacked in favor of Kyle Dubas, the outspoken analytics supporting GM of the Ontario Hockey League's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Dubas is a young innovator, still under 30 years old, and has gained a lot of attention over the last couple of years by fully embracing hockey analytics.

Since being hired by the Greyhounds, Dubas has slowly improved the low budget team every year. The year before he took over they registered just 56 points, the following year 64 points, in 2012-13 they made the playoffs with 78 points, and last season, they racked up 95 points and made the second round.

The Maple Leafs have a long way to go to improve from an analytics point of view, but this is a smart move, and if he has a real say in the organization, they should improve drastically.
