Manchester United will be without their most experienced midfielder to start the season.

Michael Carrick will miss 10-12 weeks after undergoing surgery on his left ankle, Manchester United announced. The operation was to repair torn ankle ligaments.

Carrick struggled last season, but was expected to play a role for the Red Devils this year. New manager Louis van Gaal identified him as an important player to the team because of his experience, but now he is going to be out at least until the end of September.

Manchester United strengthened their midfield already this summer by signing Ander Herrera, but he will need some help. Carrick was one candidate to play alongside him, but that won't be the case at the beginning of the season now. That means Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher or Marouane Fellaini will have to impress and take the job.
