Rookie Ty Dillon won Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Rookie Ty Dillon scored an emotional first victory in Saturday's Nationwide Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Pit strategy under caution vaulted Dillon to second with 24 laps to go. On the subsequent restart, leader Kyle Busch was slow, allowing Dillon to pounce. He passed Busch in Turn 1 and then outran the veteran despite concerns Dillon might run out of fuel.

"Our car had good speed all weekend," Dillon said. "We got out front, man, and she unleashed. It was awesome."

Matt Kenseth, Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano completed the top five finishers.

"I got down there in Turn 1 and the car never turned," Busch said. "Then, Ty got by me and made me look stupid."

An exuberant Dillon celebrated by parking his Chevrolet on the start/finish line before climbing on his car, pointing at the sky.

Dillon is the grandson of Richard Childress and the brother of Austin Dillon, the defending Nationwide champion and currently a rookie in the Sprint Cup Series. Ty replaced Austin as driver of the No. 3 Nationwide car this season.
