Emmanuel Riviere is moving north.
Newcastle have completed the signing of Emmanuel Riviere from Monaco. The Magpies reportedly paid £6 million for the 24-year-old striker.
Riviere scored 10 goals in the league for Monaco last season and 17 overall. He was a France youth international, but has not played for the senior team.
Riviere was out of his depth at Monaco, where he was plenty competent but not befitting a team that has serious European ambitions. He should fit in well at St. James' Park, though. He's a capable player at a position of need and at 24 years old, should be a solid contributor for years.
Newcastle haven't made any blockbuster signings this summer, but they have quietly made several moves that should strengthen the squad. Between Riviere, Siem de Jong, Jack Colback, Remy Cabella, Ayoze Perez and Daryl Janmaat, the Magpies certainly have a deeper team that they did a year ago and a more well-rounded one.
