A late push helped Australian Michael Rogers win the first Tour de France stage of his cycling career.
After breaking away from a trio of leaders with 4.5 kilometers in the 16th stage of the Tour de France, Michael Rogers became the first rider to reach Bagneres-de-Luchon Tuesday, but Vicenzo Nibali continues to wear the Yellow Jersey.
Rogers, an Australian riding for Tinkoff-Saxo, earned the first stage victory of his career, finishing the 237 km stage in 6 hours 7 minutes 10 seconds. Thomas Voeckler of France finished nine seconds behind Rogers, along with Vasili Kiryienka, Jose Serpa, Cyril Gautier and Greg Van Avermaet.
Nibali, of Astana Pro Team, arrived 8½ minutes behind the leaders, but increased his overall lead to 4 minutes 37 seconds ahead of Valverde Belmonte. Thibault Pinot is 5:06 back.
The Tour will resume its trek through the Pyrenees Mountains, along France's border with Spain, with Stage 17 on Wednesday.
