"You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live. So live! Fight like hell!"
(skip to the 7:00 mark to see Stuart Scott's speech.)
The defining moment of the ESPY's is undoubtedly Jim Valvano's tremendous, inspiring speech in 1993 as he fought against cancer. Wednesday night, Stuart Scott was given an award bearing Valvano's name, the Jimmy V Perseverence Award, and delivered a moving speech on the same topic: living with and fighting against cancer.
Scott revealed that he'd had four surgeries in the past ten days due to complications with his disease, but how his family and those around him helped him push on and make it to Los Angeles to accept his award, ending with a hug from his youngest daughter:

It's a moment we won't forget soon, and a message we can't forget either: we often talk about an individual fighting cancer as if it's one-on-one, where Scott reminded us that it takes everybody to battle with the disease if we hope to beat it.
