The 2018 World Cup is still a ways off, but it has a logo. FIFA and the Russia organizing committee revealed the tournament's official emblem on Tuesday as part of a show that was streamed online, included plenty of talking, some music and then concluded with the logo unveiling over video by astronauts from the Russian Space Station.
Russia has already drawn praise from FIFA officials for being on-time with their venue construction, something that is a relief after South Africa and Brazil struggled to get the stadiums built in time for the 2010 and 2014 tournaments. This week, FIFA officials have been traveling around Russia, seeing stadium sites, meeting with president Vladimir Putin and, generally, being wined and dined.
FIFA has not commented on the conflict between Russia and the Ukraine, or any specific social issues in Russia, beyond saying that their general stance is to avoid violence and not to discriminate against people on any grounds.
