The depleted 49ers defense took another hit Monday night, as linebacker Patrick Willis left the game in the third quarter with a toe injury.

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis left Monday night's game against the St. Louis Rams with a toe injury. Willis suffered the injury late in the first half and stayed in the locker room as the Rams' began their first offensive drive of the second half.

After the Rams jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, the 49ers' defense shut St. Louis down into the second half as San Francisco took a 17-14 lead. Before leaving, Willis had three tackles on the night.

He was replaced by rookie Chris Borland, who joins Michael Wilhoite. Wilhoite replaced NaVorro Bowman last January after the latter suffered torn knee ligaments.

The 49ers are already dealing with a number of injuries on defense, but there might not be a bigger absence than that of Willis. Needless to say, San Francisco can't afford many more injuries, as nearly every area of the defense is being stretched to its limit.
