Shkodran Mustafi is a central defender with some, but not much experience at right back. Jerome Boateng is a central defender with extensive experience at right back. Philipp Lahm is a right back with some experience at central midfield. For reasons unbeknownst to anyone, Jogi Löw has been playing Mustafi as a right back, Boateng as a central defender and Lahm as a central midfielder. It's been awful, because duh.

But then Mustafi went down with a pretty nasty non-contact lower leg injury, and he's been substituted in the 70th minute against Algeria. His replacement was central midfielder Sami Khedira, which moved Lahm to right back. Germany have now improved significantly because of an injury.

That's not to say they couldn't have gone on to score and beat Algeria without Mustafi going down, but it's pretty embarrassing that Löw's decision-making has been so bad that Germany literally just got a lot better specifically because a good player got injured. That's amazing.

It's still 0-0.
