The Royals picked a good time for their biggest inning in the World Series.
San Francisco Giants starter Jake Peavy was knocked out after recording just four outs during Game 6 of the World Series on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium, allowing five runs in the second inning to the Kansas City Royals.
The Royals lead the Giants 7-0 after two innings in Game 6, needing a win to force a Game 7 on Wednesday.
Kansas City scored seven runs in the previous three games combined.
Peavy's start of just 1⅓ innings is the shortest start in a World Series since David Wells lasted only one inning in Game 5 of the 2003 World Series for the New York Yankees against the Miami Marlins. Peavy recorded the shortest non-injury start in the World Series since Mark Thurmond of the San Diego Padres lasted only one out in Game 5 against the Detroit Tigers in 1984.
After three straight hits to open the second inning, including an RBI double by Mike Moustakas, Peavy looked like he might escape the jam, striking out Omar Infante and getting Alcides Escobar to ground a ball up the first base line. But first baseman Brandon Belt got confused on the play, thanks to Peavy, who was pointing to throw home even though Salvador Perez remained at third.
Belt got a late start to first base and Escobar was credited with a single, loading the bases. Nori Aoki followed with a single for a 2-0 lead to chase Peavy, then the Royals tacked on five runs with three straight hits against previously the untouchable Yusmeiro Petit.
