The Royals and Giants head to San Francisco for Game 3 with the series evened up at 1-1.
After the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals split the first two games of the 2014 World Series, the Fall Classic shifts to San Francisco, beginning with Game 3 on Friday night at AT&T Park.
Jeremy Guthrie got the job done in his one and only previous postseason start for the Royals, throwing five innings of one-run baseball in Game 3 of the ALCS against Baltimore. Guthrie allowed three hits and two walks while striking out two in the start as Kansas City won, 2-1.
Opposing Guthrie will be Tim Hudson, who has had one good start and one bad start this postseason for San Francisco, though he's lasted at least six innings both times. While he's piled up the innings in the postseason thus far, a few uneven starts in September had some questioning whether Hudson was fatigued. Manager Bruce Bochy put those thoughts to rest
"I don't know if it was fatigue as much as he was dealing with a nagging hip. It's hard enough to play this game when you're healthy, but when you're pitching and your hip's bothering you a little bit, and he's a warrior," Bochy told reporters on Wednesday. "He was never complaining. He was never making excuses, but it was a fact. I think it was affecting him a little bit."
The Giants will look to rebound in Game 3, as Hudson has since he put his hip woes behind him. The 7-2 loss they suffered on Wednesday night no-doubt made for a long flight home, but the San Francisco has plenty of veteran experience to rely on, especially from its starting pitcher. The bats will have to come alive, and it will be interesting to monitor how the flyball pitcher Guthrie fairs with the expansive outfield in San Francisco. We know for sure that the defense behind him will be able to track down balls with the best of them.
