Mistakes and injuries doomed the Oilers.

Games between the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers used to be one-sided affairs. The Sedins & Co. would roll into Edmonton and roll back out with a dominant victory.

Those matchups are different these days now that Vancouver has been knocked down a few pegs. But while the matchup might be slightly more evenly-matched, the Canucks still managed to eke out a 3-2 win at Rexall Place.

They had to work for it, however. Edmonton struck first with a goal from Jordan Eberle in the first period off a nice feed from winger Taylor Hall. Vancouver then scored the next two, thanks to efforts from Luca Sbisa and Linden Vey on the power play.

Edmonton managed to make things interesting in the third period, as impressive rookie Leon Draisaitl set up David Perron for a goal early in the frame. But as they often do, Edmonton's mistakes would come back to haunt them. Ben Scrivens erased a mostly decent start when he turned over the game-winning goal to Derek Dorsett while the Oilers were on the power play.

The Oilers can take solace in an otherwise decent effort against Vancouver.

3 things

1. Taylor Hall's speed can sometimes be his downfall - Look, Taylor Hall might very well be one of the fastest hockey players alive. But sometimes that means he opens himself up to dangerous injuries like the one he suffered on Saturday. It's a real shame Hall has missed so much time to injury over the last couple of seasons, and Oilers fans can only hope his most recent one won't keep him off the ice for too long.

2. Ben Scrivens is still working out the kinks - The Oilers netminder has weathered an inconsistent start to the season, to say the least. That beat continued in earnest against the Canucks, as Scrivens mixed flashes of brilliance with flashes of befuddling incompetence. Scrivens stopped 27 of 30 shots in the loss and made a couple of outstanding stops late to keep the Oilers alive. But ultimately the game was lost when Scrivens' brain stopped working on this play:

3. Ryan Miller is an Oilers demon - Ryan Miller may have a lot to prove this season in Vancouver, but he has nothing left to prove against the Edmonton Oilers. The Canuck netminder's win on Saturday made him 10-0-0 against the Oilers in his career, an impressive mark even considering the competition. It was yet another high point in an early season full of them for Miller.
