Jim Tomsula and Vic Fangio are two possibilities to take over as head coach of the 49ers if the team parts ways with Jim Harbaugh.

The San Francisco 49ers are quickly approaching, what appears to be, an inevitable split with head coach Jim Harbaugh, and if that day comes, the team is likely to promote from within the organization to fill the void.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the team believes that multiple coaches capable of taking over as head coach are already under contract with the team. The pair worth highlighting most are defensive line coach Jim Tomsula and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

The 49ers defense currently ranks third in the NFL in total yardage allowed and both coaches have been with the team for multiple seasons. Fangio joined the 49ers when Harbaugh did, following the coach from Stanford where he held the same position, while Tomsula first joined the 49ers in 2007 after a head coaching stint for the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe. Upon the firing of Mike Singletary in 2010, Tomsula served as the team's interim head coach for one game, as the 49ers defeated the Arizona Cardinals, 38-7.

If Harbaugh and the 49ers part ways, there is still the possibility that the team could hire from outside the organization and Adam Gase is the main candidate if that's the case. The former 49ers offensive assistant left to join the Denver Broncos in 2009 and is in his second season as the team's offensive coordinator.
