The 31st annual Breeders Cup Classic was won by Bayern on Saturday at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., capturing one of the most prestigious events in horse racing, winning the 1¼-mile race at 6/1 odds, beating out favorites Shared Belief and California Chrome.
Jockey Martin Garcia rode Bayern to victory, his third career Breeders Cup win, all with trainer Bob Baffert.
"He ran such a good race today," Baffert said on the NBC television broadcast. "He gave us the race we hoped he would give."
Bayern won the race, with Toast of New York second, California Chrome third and Shared Belief fourth.
Shared Belief was the favorite coming into the race at 5/2 odds, though it was expected to be a showdown with California Chrome (7/2 odds), the horse that managed to win the first two stages of the Triple Crown this year. California Chrome fell short of completing the Triple Crown by losing in the Belmont, but had five wins in seven starts this year.
Shared Belief was a perfect seven-for-seven in 2014 coming in to the Breeders Cup Classic.
California Chrome also struggled in the Pennsylvania Derby in September, finishing in sixth place after a 105-day break between the Belmont and that race.
The Classic carries a huge purse of $5 million, the most of any race on the season. It's the final big race of the year, always with the best horses, so the huge purse is warranted.
