Was this supposed to be a trick play? Or just a confused returner out of his element?
It's always awkward when the ball gets kicked to one of the players on the kickoff team who isn't the designated returner. This USC player was not quite sure how to handle it:
After a few watches of this, we're not quite clear what happened. He very clearly is on the 10-yard-line when he kind of kneels, and a kneel should kill a play. However, he clearly never touches his knee to the ground. And the play isn't marked dead at the 10-yard-line where the semi-knee happened, but at the 13-yard-line, where the returner is when the official sprints in from off the screen blowing the play dead.
It's quite possible the returner was faking a kneeldown in hopes the Washington State defenders would stop chasing him so he could sprint untouched into the end zone ... but he didn't get that opportunity, because it was blown dead. More likely, however, the lineman saw the short kick and immediately called for a fair catch which he vaguely appears to do well before catching the kick.
He could've run with it for about 10 yards untouched or handed the ball to the intended receiver for a more successful play. Either way, it didn't particularly matter, considering two plays later was an 87-yard touchdown.
