The Avalanche have shipped P.A. Parenteau to Montreal.
A day ahead of the beginning on the free agency period, the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche have made a trade, with the Habs shipping Daniel Briere headed to Colorado, and P.A. Parenteau and a 5th round, 2015 pick going back to Montreal, per TSN's Bob McKenzie.
MTL acquires P.A Parenteau from COL. I believe Daniel Briere is headed to COL in return.

The trade is a bit of a head-scratcher, as both players making $4 million next season, and Parenteau making the same number the following year. Parenteau is coming off a year in which he scored 14 goals in 55 games, and is still only 31 years old.
Briere spent the season sliding down the Canadiens depth chart, scored fewer goals that Parenteau in 14 more games played, and isn't getting any younger at 36. The move doesn't clear any cap space for the Avalanche, who are attempting to re-sign top center Paul Stastny. With Montreal not retaining any of the $4 million owed to Briere, the move won't help Colorado in free agency.
