The Tampa Bay Lightning have selected defensive prospect Anthony DeAngelo with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
DeAngelo, 18, is a right-handed shooting defenseman who has spent the last three seasons playing for the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League. Selected with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2011 OHL Priority Draft, DeAngelo made his debut during the 2011-12 regular season appearing in 68 games (the most of his career to this point). Over the span of three seasons, the Sewell, New Jersey-native has appeared in a total of 181 regular season games and has accumulated 152 points over that time.
Despite playing in a career-low 51 games in 2013-14, DeAngelo registered career-high totals in all three primary offensive categories by scoring 15 goals and 56 assists for a total of 71 points. This career-year came on the heels of DeAngelo leading all OHL defensive in assists during the 2012-13 season (49).
Listed at 5'10, 175 pounds, DeAngelo was ranked as the No. 32 overall prospect in the ISS yearend evaluation. Praised for his offensive skills, the ISS compares DeAngelo's game to that of Phil Housley:
DeAngelo is one of the most intriguing players in this year's draft. The type of player who is very devise amongst scouts and fans alike, you either love him or hate him. He is a supremely gifted skater and puck handler. He has the ability to control a game from the back end. He has so much skill that he sometimes has a hard time letting the game come to him instead of forcing things. He can be a bit of an equal opportunity player in the sense that gives the puck away far too often for a player of this caliber. Puck management and defensive zone play has much room for improvement but not unattainable. The level of skating ability and puck skills make DeAngelo a player that must be considered potential first round material, especially in a weak draft year for d-man.
