The Maple Leafs traded for the exact type of player they should stop trading for.

Oh, those whacky Toronto Maple Leafs. They're at it again.

They jumped into the trading game on Saturday by sending defenseman Carl Gunnarsson and a draft pick to the St. Louis Blues for Roman Polak.

From a Maple Leafs perspective this is, at its best, nothing more than moving some deck chairs around and getting yet another boat anchor when it comes to moving the puck and driving possession. The Maple Leafs already have too many players like Polak and just went out of their way to bring in yet another one.

Gunnarsson, 27, has always seemed to be a little underappreciated. He takes on some of the heaviest minutes in the NHL from a competition and zone starts perspective, and until this past year always managed to come out as a positive player.

He is coming off of hip surgery, which could be a concern, but he still seems like a better bet to be a positive contributor than Polak.

Much has been made over the past couple of years about Toronto's problems when it comes to getting outshot and not having the puck, and it's almost as if they're going out of their way to assemble the worst possession team imaginable.
