The Detroit Red Wings have selected forward prospect Dylan Larkin with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
Larkin, 17, is a left-handed shooting forward prospect who has spent time at both center and left wing. He has played the last several years with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and has represented the United States internationally on two occasions. Selected with the No. 184 overall pick in the 2012 Ontario Hockey League priority draft by the Errie Otters, Larkin was also selected with the No. 132 overall pick by Vityaz Podolsk in the 2013 KHL Draft.
Despite these other options, Larkin is currently committed to play at the University of Michigan in 2014-15.
Listed at 6'0, 190 pounds, Larkin finished the year ranked as the No. 15 prospect on the ISS year-end evaluation. Praised for his strong skating ability, Larkin is viewed as a two-way forward with high offensive upside:
Larkin is a leader by example to his teammates on the ice. He plays an all- around responsible game and is a competitor. Larkin plays with high pace at both ends of the rink and contributes defensively as well as offensively. His speed, instincts, and hockey sense enable him to do things offensively at a high level and that translate to pro. At times he defers to teammates a little too much but in general has a mature feel for the game.
He utilizes his speed up and down the ice and is willing to drive the net and play with purpose in the tough areas. Although Larkin is average sized at best, however he plays big enough to be effective and a top line player. Like this kid's skill/leadership/passion. Larkin's hockey sense and compete level stand out on most nights.
