Though the Arizona Cardinals retain the top record in the NFC, the division rival Seattle Seahawks cut a game off their lead via a 19-3 win on Sunday. The Cardinals defense played well, beating up quarterback Russell Wilson and allowing few big plays. However, Arizona couldn't get anything going offensively without top receiver Larry Fitzgerald. The All-Pro wideout missed the game with an MCL sprain, and there's some question as to how soon he can return. According to the team, Fitzgerald wouldn't have participated Friday if there were a practice scheduled.
Despite missing the game, Fitzgerald leads the team with 46 catches and 658 receiving yards. He has also produced the most plays of 20 yards or more of any Arizona receiver. That's an important figure considering new staring quarterback Drew Stanton's preference for downfield passing. If Fitzgerald misses more time, the Cardinals should expect another rough day at the office.
Tashaun Gipson sprains MCL
The Cleveland Browns continue to win games despite increasing injuries on both sides of the ball and poor play from quarterback Brian Hoyer. They'll have to overcome another obstacle for the rest of the regular season as starting safety Tashaun Gipson is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with a grade-3 MCL sprain according to ESPN's Adam Caplan.
Gipson injured the knee during the fourth quarter of Sunday's 26-24 win over the Atlanta Falcons. After lying on the turf for several minutes in obvious pain the team's medical staff carted him off to the locker room. The recovery period for his injury is 6-8 weeks, meaning a return for the playoffs isn't out of the question. Gipson leads the Browns in interceptions with six and is fifth on the team in tackles with 52.
Tom Benson donates record amount to Pro Football Hall of Fame
New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson has pledged $11 million to help renovate the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the largest donation the organization has received in its history, according to ESPN.
One million dollars of the donation will go towards to the Hall of Fame's Legends Landing program, a residence for retired players. The other $10 million will help renovate Fawcett Stadium, which will be renamed Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.
"This is a donation that I feel very strongly about," Benson said in a statement. "I have taken great pride in the recovery and renaissance of my home city, New Orleans, not only prior to but, more importantly, post-Katrina. We have done great things in our city, and today we can proudly present New Orleans as a city that is a role model to other communities. We are proud of that. So when approached to make a donation to the Pro Football of Fame in Canton, Ohio, I did not think long at all about why we should help."
