Fantasy football is back! So are injuries and now you may be preparing for a playoff run and looking to upgrade your roster. Here are some players who are hot on the waiver wire lists but could have some potential downside.
Fantasy football is back! We bring you our weekly list of players who have some downside as potential waiver wire busts. Some of these players may appear in our waiver wire suggestions, but this list is designed to point out factors that could affect or limit their production.
RB LeGarrette Blount - New England Patriots (owned in 31 percent of all leagues): Blount is back in the fold with the Patriots after being released by the Pittsburgh Steelers and what a return. After Jonas Gray got in Bill Belichick's doghouse by missing practice, Blount got the work in Week 12 against the Detroit Lions with a 12 carry 78 yard game that also produced two touchdowns. Gray was coming off a four touchdown game in Week 11 and didn't see a single snap. Trying to guess what Belichick will do with his backfield is a losing venture. He is just as likely to return to Gray as he is to feed Blount.
TE Tim Wright - New England Patriots (owned in 16 percent of all leagues): For reasons similar to Blount and Gray, counting on Wright to reproduce his five catch, 36 yard and two touchdown performance is an exercise in futility. Wright's usage has been sporadic since his trade to the Patriots despite some success. Wright's snap count exploded against the Lions but there is no guarantee he will see similar usage in Week 13.
RB Pierre Thomas - New Orleans Saints (owned in 37 percent of all leagues): Thomas was cleared to play in Week 13 after missing four weeks with a shoulder injury. Thomas saw the field Monday Night and carried the ball five times for 19 yards. He was also targeted eight times in the passing game catching only six passes for 37 yards. Mark Ingram got the bulk of the carries in the run game and Joe Morgan got in on the action as well. Thomas is a low end flex play until you see more production from him.
RB Latavius Murray - Oakland Raiders (owned in 25 percent of all leagues): Murray was having a great game in Week 12 before he sustained a concussion in the second quarter of the game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Since it was a Thursday night game his chances of playing in Week 13 could be better but as of Monday he was still square in the middle of the concussion protocol. There is no guarantee he will be cleared to play in Week 13 as concussions are hard to predict. He was also hit helmet to helmet and hard enough to cause a fumble. He will face a tough matchup in Week 13 against the Rams as St. Louis is giving up the 10th least fantasy points to running backs.
WR Charles Johnson - Minnesota Vikings (owned in 1 percent of all leagues): Johnson is a intriguing player getting some play on fantasy radars right now. A talented second year receiver, Johnson is seeing an increase in his playing time due to the decline of Greg Jennings and the inability to get Cordarrelle Patterson involved in Norv Turner's offense. Johnson has emerged as Bridgewater's go to guy but as with any rookie quarterback you have to be careful because production can be inconsistent. Also, tight end Kyle Rudolph is back as well. In the past two games, Johnson has been targeted 18 times and has nine receptions for 139 yards and a touchdown so the upside could be worth the risk.
