The Athletics' starting catcher was hurt while tagging out Eric Hosmer at the plate in the first inning.

Athletics catcher Geovany Soto left in the second inning of the AL Wild Card play-in game against the Royals with a left thumb injury.

Soto was hurt while tagging Eric Hosmer at home plate on the third out of the bottom of the first inning. The 31-year-old veteran remained in the game for the second inning but said he wasn't able to effectively receive the ball, according to the TBS broadcast. He was replaced in the bottom of the third inning by Derek Norris, who appeared in 107 games behind the plate for the Athletics during the regular season.

In 49 games with Oakland this season, Soto hit .262/.354/.357 with four extra-base hits in 49 plate appearances. The 2008 All-Star missed the first 95 games of the season, which he started with the Rangers, with a knee injury before landing on the disabled list again in June due to a strained right groin.
